General Questions


What are the eligibility requirements to serve with ISCOPES?

ISCOPES team members must:

  • Be enrolled as a GW student
  • Be interested in personal and communal healthy living
  • Commit an average of 10 hours of service per month (an average of 2-3 hours/week; not including commute time) from September through April
  • Agree to a background or security check, fingerprinting, and/or TB test, as applicable (TBD depending on community partner site requirements)
  • Previous experiences with service, health education and promotion, and leadership are desirable but not required.

What do ISCOPES participants do?

When you join ISCOPES, you will be placed in an interprofessional Learning Community of passionate students, committed professionals, and concerned citizens, all of whom care about the same populations and health issues that speak to you. ISCOPES Learning Communities focus on people throughout the lifespan - infants through older adults - and incorporate thinking and doing something about at least some aspect of most health issues. Each Learning Community concentrates on one of the following Health Domains:
  • Guardian Engagement
  • Healthy Teen Scholars
  • Adult Health Literacy
  • Veterans Health Project
  • Senior Wellness


Will I receive credit?

All students who successfully complete a year of service with ISCOPES will receive:
  • A special designation on their academic transcript (letter of explanation of special designation and ISCOPES available for transcript accompaniment upon request).
     
  • Verified content to add to your resume - We'll help give you the words to accurately describe your experience!
    • MPH students - More and more employers are looking for references and letters of recommendations!
    • Med students - You will need a Dean's Letter for your residency!
       
  • Letters of Recommendation for scholarship applications, fellowships, internships, and references for jobs (available upon request)

  • "Credit" for your service
    • MPH/MS/HSML students - Work with the ISCOPES office to get professional development hours
    • Community Health Track Med students - Substitute ISCOPES for your Summer Opportunity requirement
